One of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling computer baseball games is now available in a special deluxe package. Earl Weaver II: Commemorative Edition features the original Earl Weaver II game (with support for 256 color VGA graphics and both AdLib and Roland sound cards) along with the Commissioner's Disk II and 1990 MLBPA Player Stats and Manager Profiles disks. Also included is a Weaver On Strategy book and special Earl Weaver baseball card not available anywhere else.
Earl Weaver II blends detailed simulation elements with an easy-to-play action game that features an innovative camera system. This allows for unlimited views around the ballpark and a TV-style presentation that will cut to different angles during play. Statistics are also a big part of the game, as players can simulate a complete nine innings within one minute and track 50 different batter and fielding stats as well as over 30 pitching categories.
Instant replay lets you review the most recent play of the game, and you can select from multiple offensive and defensive strategies, replace injured fielders, choose either a five- or four-man rotation, designate your closer, warm up relievers in the bullpen, and even visit the mound to determine if your pitcher is fatigued! Don't like to actually play the games? No problem!
Earl Weaver II includes a Stats and Physics game (no graphics but play descriptions and wind and ballpark effects), Managerial option (you call the action), and Super Fast Stat Game (no graphics, descriptions or wind effects). With the two included add-on disks, you can also run a draft, edit ballparks, create leagues, set manager tendencies, generate schedules, and play with all teams (represented by city name only), players and ballparks from the 1990 season.
Earl Weaver Baseball II is a realistic baseball game in 3D. Graphics are in full screen SVGA, and feature fully animated players and various camera positions. Compared to the original there are enhanced physics, and the real and fantasy playground options help to get an authentic atmosphere ingame.
The game has four different skill levels. Various statistics can help you to improve your gameplay. Accumulated full game stats with over 50 stats, ratings for hitter and fielders, and more than 30 pitcher stats. Ratings will be helpful for you while choosing the right tactics, for example against powerful hitters. Statistics for all the major leagues of the day are included as well as manager stats.
Included in the package is the "Commissioner's Disk II" containing a Manager Construction Set to create your own managers, a complete Fantasy League creation module, the ability to design your own parks and fields, and even print baseball cards.
Multiplayer options let you challenge Earl Weaver himself or play against friends.
One of the best baseball series ever made, Earl Weaver Baseball nevertheless was very short-lived-- only 2 were released in the span of 5 years. In every respect, both games are pioneers of the genre: great graphics and sounds (for their time, of course), amazing customizability, and incredible play value make EWB among the best baseball games ever made. Baseball Sims have come a long way since then. The original Earl Weaver Baseball deserves to go down in history as THE first sport game that successfully combines strong arcade gameplay with rock-solid statistics. Prior to its release, sports games tended to be simplistic arcadish games or dry statistical models. Earl Weaver brought both of those approaches together and gave birth to the statistical/simulation model. Earl Weaver Baseball 2 continues the high standards set by its predecessor by becoming one of the first baseball sims to employ more varied sound. You could even see a manager sometimes coming out from the dugout once in a while to argue with a call!
One of the strongest parts of the game is its configurability. One can create the perfect player who always delivers or a stadium of unbelievable proportions. League and non-league play are also possible. Seasons can be of any length, although gamers looking for automatic playoff modes will be disappointed. Players from different eras can compete on the same field, helping inveterate baseball fans argue about who was the best center fielder of all time, etc. Fields from different eras are also available and factor in such variables as wind and astroturf. Helpful advice from the great manager Earl Weaver is easily accessible.
With spot-on gameplay, solid controls, and virtually unlimited replayability, EWB2 is a game that deserves to stay on every baseball fan's hard drive. Although the graphics are a little dated, the gameplay and the stat engine are outstanding. Maybe some of the game companies can learn from the older games. Many games nowadays can't even come close to touching the EWB series. The creativity and intuitive design made the game infinitely enjoyable. No matter how many times you play, there's always something more to do. A true classic, without a doubt.
Note: In a wonderful break from the usual lack of support for discontinued products, Eddie Dombrower, the designer and copyright holder of EWB games, maintains a wonderful EWB Support Page on the Web that contains many stats and utilities. Best of all, he is hard at work on I Got It Baseball, an unofficial EWB sequel that is based extensively on the same engine.
