NBA HangTime is a two-on-two hoops contest in the tradition of NBA Jam and NBA Jam T.E. Choose from 29 NBA teams and 145 professional stars with ratings based on the 1995-96 season, or create your own players and save them. Customize your athlete's head, uniform, attributes, or name, and then build his ratings by winning games or correctly answering trivia questions. Sixteen different heads allow you to create offbeat characters such as aliens or clowns.
Moves include alley oops, spin moves, double dunks, and team "fire" (players get hot after making three shots in a row). Up to four players can compete simultaneously in venues ranging from a rooftop and jungle arena to a harbor and city court. Enter in codes to unlock hidden characters, power-ups, and other bonuses. The game will also keep track of statistics such as points-per-game average, longest winning streak, most games played, and overall winning percentage.
All right, besides the name change, Hang Time added a bunch of new twists to the NBA Jam formula, such as alley-oops and double-dunks. The "On Fire" gimmick returns, and this time if you do enough double-dunks, you can even share the fire with your teammate!
The gameplay, aside from what's mentioned above, is similar to NBA Jam Tournament Edition. You play a 2-on-2 basketball game with professional NBA teams and players. There are four quarters in the game, each quarter being three minutes long. Your goal is obviously to score more points than the other team, but you can break the rules by shoving your opponent(s) in order to get the ball. You can also do spectacular over-the-top slam dunks from 20 feet in the air! Anything goes, except for that annoying goal tending. More players can join in anytime during the game.
The game uses the 1996-97 NBA roster. Michael Jordan and Shaq couldn't make it into the game because of (ugh!) the two movies Space Jam and Kazaam. Nevertheless, the game has Patrick Ewing, Dennis Rodman, and other great superstars of that time. There are 29 teams in total, two more than there were in NBA Jam. Once again, creating a name, a PIN and defeating all the 29 teams will bring you good fortune...
Another new feature of Hang Time is the Create Player mode, in which you obviously create your own player. You can give him a normal or wacked-out head, power him up with attributes and special privileges, and give him the jersey of your favorite team. Yes, you can use him in your quest to defeat the 29 teams, and yes, four people can use their created players in a single match-up.
The graphics are nice and crisp. The game is presented in its original arcade resolution, but you can change that to a bigger, stretched, and distorted resolution. The sound is also sweet: you're able to hear the crowd yell, "AIR BALL!!" and the announcer going, "Rama-lama-ding-dong!" The music for this game was performed by a rapper named M-Doc, and it sounds GREAT! The rap is very 90s-esque and fits the game really well. As for controls, you can opt to have all 4 people on one keyboard (!!), or you can use joysticks for each player.
The bottom line: As a wise man once said, "I believe this game really rocks all the way!", and I have to agree with him. This is not only my favorite of the NBA Jam series, but also my favorite sports game. Ever. Give it a spin today; you won't regret it!
This is a special full rip of the game which includes all the in-game music, something the common rip floating around the Internet doesn't have.
