Tecmo's World Cup '90 arcade game was remodeled based on the 1992 European Championships for its home computer release. The tournament's structure of the time (2 groups of 4 play each other once, top 2 go through to semi-finals followed by a final) is recreated, with any of Europe's soccer nations available to be chosen as those 8, and 1 or 2 human players choosing their team, playing on either keyboard or joystick.
The matches are played from a side-scrolling perspective. The ball sticks to the player's foot, and can be kicked or passed with a press of the fire button. The referee is fairly lenient when it comes to tough sliding tackles, although fierce contact will result in a free kick being given.
European Championship 1992 was made in 1992 by a company called Elite Systems Ltd. This game was made to commemorate the 1992 tournament, when the best European teams of the time competed for the title. The actual winner was Denmark, which didn't even qualify for the tournament, but when the Former Yugoslavia could not enter the Danish team was called in as the wild card. That's the historical background of the game.
This game offers you many options. You can play alone or with one friend, and you can set the length of the matches to 5, 10 or 20 minutes. You can also setup the keys you wish to use, your video and sound options and the input device (either joystick or the keyboard).
But now let's talk about the game. It's a normal soccer game, where you have to score goals, to win and go to the next stage. You can choose your favorite European team, and try to win the European championship. You will have to play the tournament with two groups of 4 teams. The best two teams of each group will qualify for the semi-finals and the winners of the semi-finals will compete for the cup!
The gameplay is a bit difficult, but you can change the keys to play, which does make it somewhat friendlier. The graphics are good for the time, and the sound was also very good for the time. I give this game 3 stars.
Conversion of Tecmo's arcade soccer game World Cup 1990, though the computer version has been licensed to the European Championship of 1992. It's a standard isometric view arcade style soccer game - easy, simple, as mediocre as a soccer game can get. You can choose from 25 European teams represented in that tournament, although there's hardly a difference between playing, for example, Greece and Italy (except nationalistic pride, of course ;)) If you like the arcade game, you might find this one a bit nostalgic--- although not necessary fun at all. There are simply far too many better action-oriented soccer games to occupy your time with.
