Set in the American West of the 1880s, Freddy Pharkas was one of the fastest guns in the west. However in one particular gunfight with an outlaw named Kenny he was outgunned and Freddy had his ear shot off. This traumatic experience caused Freddy to give up his pistols and enroll in the school of pharmacology. Blocking out the memories of his past, Freddy arrives in the town of Corsegold with the dream to own and run his own pharmacy. Working with the town's doctor, Freddy is able to fill prescriptions, mix concoctions and diagnose simple symptoms. Business among the townsfolk is brisk however, the good times are not to last as suddenly townsfolk are run out of town and businesses are being foreclosed and boarded up. Freddy must deal with the town's problems, and discover the larger plot, or risk having a fancy shop in an empty town and losing all his customers.
Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist is a humorous point-and-click side-scrolling adventure game from Al Lowe. As such it has many similarities to other Sierra adventure games including Leisure Suit Larry (Al Lowe's previous work) and King's Quest. Players use the action bar at the top of the screen to choose an action type that is used on locations and objects visible to the player. Freddy can walk to new locations, look at particular objects, attempt to use objects, talk to people and enter his inventory to access items that have been picked up. Like other sierra games, successful actions add to the player's score, judging the player on 1000 points.
There is a little anecdote behind how Freddy came to life: Al Lowe was discussing how a western computer game could be fun. In the process, he tried to pronounce "farmer" and "rancher" at the same time. It came out "farmer-cist" and thus "Freddy Pharkas, Frontier Pharmacist" was born.
Freddy Pharkas, Frontier Pharmacist is a great adventure game made by Sierra in 1992. It takes place in Coarsegold, California (a former Gold Rush town in the old west) and you play the role of Freddy Pharkas, former gunslinger who became a pharmacist.
Freddy was just living his life in peace when Coarsegold was suddenly threatened by series of troubles which the citizens were unable to stop. It's up to you to save Coarsegold using only your wits and some creativity. During the game, you will need to have "The Modern Day Book of Health and Hygiene" which comes with the original game, but you can download it from the extras (it is titled as Manual).
The graphics are nice and the music fits quite nicely with the game's setting. The characters (the closeups) are well drawn and the backgrounds look fine too.
If you are a true Sierra fan you should not miss this game, and if you are not, you should not miss it either. It's simply a good, funny and entertaining game. (or as the Computer Gaming World called it: "The Blazing Saddles of computer games").
Yee-haw! Experience life in the wild, wild west in this adventure co-designed by jokesters Al Lowe and Josh Mandel. As the title suggests, you are a gunman-turned-pharmacist who will soon find enough cause to pick up a gun again. Excellent puzzles, cool plot, and tons of zany characters. The humor is somewhat stale and predictable, however. Suffice it to say that if you have never understood the appeal of John Wayne movies and raunchy cowboy humor, you won't enjoy this game. But for anyone who appreciates jokes that have the word "flatulant" in them, this is the perfect game for you.
