Comanche 2 is one of the more uninteresting games I've played. I've always thought helicopters were cool but give me a good old-fashioned airplane (or X-Wing, even) any day of the week. Helicopters are hard to maneuver and frustratingly easy to shoot down, which is good when you've got the enemy in your sights but pretty terrible when they're on top of you.
There are 60 missions in the game spread across several campaigns. They get progressively harder and some are next to impossible. You receive instructions at the beginning of each mission but, unfortunately, you don't get much guidance as you're carrying it out. A little chatter from your wingmen (or the home base, as the case may be) might be nice or perhaps an on-screen indicator (like the one used in Rogue Squadron) could be employed to give you a hint in which direction you should be headed.
The one aspect of the game that drove me crazy was the incredible lack of detail. It's really hard to tell what's what, even when "high detail" is selected and you're running a system in SVGA with plenty of video RAM (in my case, 4 MB). Your mission overview talks about various types of helicopters and how a certain type is on your side -- but how can you tell? And if the mission is at night or in adverse conditions, forget it.
Ironically, the end-game animations are far superior to what you see during the game, although I discovered that the animations don't actually reproduce what happened to you right before you bit the dust (or won, as the case may be). They're just preset scenarios. Impressive but not relevant.
I was surprised that a game that was relesed in 1998 was created to run under DOS. Windows is obviously the way to go these days (c. late 1990s) and the graphics are always superior to the pixelated ones you see in DOS-based programs. Overall, if you're a helicopter nut, you might want to give this one a try (provided you find it cheap). Otherwise, skip it.
Graphics: Not very good even in the best mode with plenty of video RAM.
Sound: Fairly nondescript. It's hard to make out what's being said to you by your wingmen.
Enjoyment: Not much fun.
Replay Value: Not a whole lot.
The second iteration in Nova Logic's Comanche series. Fly a Comanche helicopter over a wide variety of terrain and blast various enemy vehicles and aircraft with your array of munitions. A wide variety of camera angles are offered for your flight experience, and the missions range from ultra-easy training to complex save-the-world scenarios.
How to run this game on modern Windows PC?
