Retribution is a standalone expansion game for 2009's Warhammer 40,000-based real-time strategy sequel, Dawn of War II. It adds new missions to the original game, and a new playable race, the Imperial Guard. In the single-player campaign, players can lead any race of their choosing, including the Imperial Guard or one of the five factions from the original game -- Space Marines, Orks, Chaos, Eldar, or Tyranids -- with distinct storyline developments for each. The real-time action focuses on battle tactics, although the expansion introduces additional base-building and resource management considerations. As in the main campaigns of earlier games in the series, heroes carry over from one mission to the next, and can be custom-upgraded as they gain experience. Taking place a decade after the events of the game's previous expansion, Chaos Rising, Retribution is set in the unstable sub-sector of Aurelia. In a crisis of unrest and warfare, each playable faction sees an opportunity to further its goals by taking control of the region. All six factions are also available in the game's online multiplayer modes.
