Wargame Construction Set is a fun little scenario editor and wargame. But though it's touted as recreating any battle from prehistory to the present day, it really should have been called the World War II Construction Set. No matter what period you set your battle in, it's curiously dominated by such foxhole-themed concepts as fortification, artillery and suppressing fire. Sure, there are Civil War, space and fantasy scenarios included, but it is disconcerting to find your elven archer "pinned down" by gunfire trench-warfare style, or that your wizard is really just an air support unit with a high number of movement points. The rules aren't very flexible -- you can't create a naval game, for example.
Nevertheless, WCS offers the inherent creative joys of a construction set, putting it almost, but not quite, up there with Racing Destruction Set. The graphics and sound are limited but more colorful than the average SSI wargame.
WCS lets you design and play turn-based strategic battles. You can create scenarios in many different time periods including modern day, ancient times, 1800's, and in the future. You have complete control over all the units, and can customize their firepower, movement points, strength, aggressiveness, etc.
Supports 1 or 2 players. Comes with 8 pre-made scenarios.
A nice classic from SSI. This is the first volume in the famous wargame series where you can build your own scenarios and play them. You can of course also play pre-made scenarios which are included.
The graphics aren't that good, but it doesn't matter that much as the controls are really good and very simple.
A design-your-own simulation covering warfare from a tactical level throughout history. Marred by a system more attuned to World War II tactics than to a generic battle system, it was quite popular in its day. Basically the user-modifiable source code of Roger Damon's previous works, the game's potential to design-your-own scenarios was limited by the failings of the system's mechanics. It was most applicable to the World War II era; a novice may well find its flexibility interesting, although the graphics are dated.
