Freddi Fish and Luther's Water Worries is a Junior Arcade game from Humongous Entertainment which is actually a lot of fun to play for both parents and kids. It's similar to classics such as Space Invaders in the sense that the overall design of the game is simple but yet fun enough to keep you wanting to play beyond a level or two.
In this one, Luther has gotten trapped in a whirlpool and must get out by finding enough worm doodles in each level to make it to the next one (I confess that I'm not sure what a "worm doodle" is; they look like regular worms to me). He fires his slingshot at rising water bubbles; some have worms on them and others contain fish, power-ups and other surprises. Points are scored depending on the size of the bubble and whether or not it has a trapped fish inside.
The biggest bubbles can trap Luther and leave him unable to fire for a few seconds. There are some other hazards as well, such as jellyfish which can daze him momentarily if he touches them and a pig in a submarine who drops bowling balls on him. The power-ups range from a high-powered slingshot to a super-powered urchin suit.
One nice touch is the ability to hold down the mouse button for rapid fire. The only drawback to this strategy is that Luther will tire out if you do it for too long.
There is also a timing mechanism in this game in the form of the water level, which slowly drops during the course of the level; if Luther runs out of water, he must start the level all over and the player loses one man. This makes the game more challenging and makes it feel like a traditional arcade game.
This game also has a two player mode where the other person plays Freddi Fish, which is nice. It's the first time I've seen two player capability in a Humongous game. There's also a melee mode, where the player simply tries to score as many points as possible before the water level hits the bottom. The best scores make it onto a high score board.
Overall, this is a fun game which kids will really enjoy. Parents should give it a chance too.
Graphics: As usual, Humongous does some nice work.
Sound: The slingshot sounds a little dinky, but that's a minor point.
Enjoyment: This game is one of those simple-yet-addicting ones.
Replay Value: There's plenty here to keep a player going, although some might find it repetitious after a while.
In Water Worries, you play Luther, a young green fish who gets sucked into a whirlpool and must find his way out. Luther's search will eventually take him through 100 underwater levels jam-packed full of action and adventure. On the way home, Luther will need to be aware of the hazards around him, while picking up worm doodles which will allow him to advance further. Bubbles, which are constantly rising from deep within the whirlpool, will force the water level down if they are allowed to reach the water's surface. If the water level becomes too low, Luther will have to retry the level, minus one energy level. To prevent this from happening, Luther must use his trusty slingshot and unlimited supply of ammo to pop the bubbles before they reach the surface. Luther also needs to be careful when navigating the whirlpool, since running into a bubble may render him momentarily trapped and unable to fire his slingshot.
