Rocket Knight is a latter-day sequel to Konami's 1993 side-scrolling platform shooter. In a universe populated by space-faring animals, players take the noble role of Sparkster, a possum who wears a high-tech battle suit and wields a powerful sword. As a brave Rocket Knight, it is Sparkster's duty to protect the known planets from the evil plans of his nemesis, Axel Gear. The hero makes his way through a series of levels, firing his energy beam, deflecting enemy attacks with his sword, and making rocket-assisted jumps to battle bad guys and overcome obstacles. As in the original Rocket Knight games, a powerful boss (with a subtle weakness) waits at the end of each level. The game's "Arcade" mode offers a challenge modeled after the 16-bit originals, with limited lives, a strict level progression, and no save points. The "Freeplay" mode allows players to choose the level they want to play and save their progress at certain points.
