Batman Forever is the officially licensed game based on the 1995 movie. The bad guys this time around are The Riddler and Two-Face. This game is an usual hybrid of side-scrolling platformer and one-on-one fighter. You make your way through levels that include some platform jumping elements, but you typically take on opponents one at a time like in a fighting game. You arsenal includes a lot of nifty bat-gadgets, and a collection of fighting moves that are unleashed with special button combinations. The graphics were rendered completely with digitized actors and objects, but none of the actors from the movie make an appearance in the game.
What is it about superhero games and games inspired by movies that tend to make them less than great? Is it that the developers take less time over them, or that they just don't translate very well? Whatever the truth, Batman Forever is a fun game featuring, as you might have guessed, that most iconic of DC superheroes - Batman.
Using some rather nice motion capture effects, Batman Forever sets you on a side scrolling mission not unlike Double Dragon where you'll face tons of henchmen plus some of the Dark Knight's finest enemies. Ok it's shallow fun, but it looks and plays a lot better than most side scrolling fighters and Gotham City looks suitably gothic and moody.
If you're a fan of the bat then you'll be pleased to learn that you can make use of a few of his special weapons, the bat-o-rang which has been with Batman from his earliest days is included and proves to be invaluable along the way. All in all I'd say this is an essential game for fans of Batman, and an entertaining game for everyone else.
This is a platform game based on the hit movie of the same name. Batman Forever uses Acclaim's Mortal Kombat engine, which started to show its age in 1996 but is still capable of delivering fluid, nonstop action. The game follows the movie's plot quite closely, so as Batman you will run into familiar foes such as The Joker and Two-Face. Repetitive enemies and very easy bosses make this an only average game, although it is arguably better than more-hyped Batman Forever: The Arcade Game, which was also published by Acclaim but developed by OCEAN. The ability to change your weapons in mid-game is a nice touch, as well as fun appearances of Robin and Catwoman. Play this only if you're a Batman fan, or really like the Mortal Kombat engine.
