Who knew that Donald Duck worked so hard to support his lifestyle? In Donald Duck's Playground, Disney's resident quacker works four part-time jobs so he can buy playground equipment for Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Sierra's game is written with the same AGI graphics engine as King's Quest and is intended to teach young children the value and purpose of money. Walking through Duckburg, you choose from simple arcade sequences in which you earn money. You can work at a toyshop, learn about change at a cash register, or put fruits and vegetables into appropriate bins. Then you spend your income on items for the three ducklings to play on.
Donald Duck's Playground won several awards from educational software magazines as best educational game of the year. In it, you are Donald, working to earn money, which you then spend to buy playground equipment for your nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie to enjoy.
The first job is to guide the Amquack Express around a top-down map with 8 stations, setting the junctions to ensure that packages are delivered to the correct stations. His job in produce involves catching fruits as they are thrown at him and placing them in the correct basket. At the toy store he must sort items by shape and colour, and be careful with the security switch. His final job is at an internal US airport, soring products based on their location's delivery code.
The equipment for the playground must then be purchased and arranged, helping young minds get an appreciation of money management and cash-handling.
Here's yet another cute little thing. You control a lovable character who's gonna celebrate his 70th birthday in a bit more then a year. It's the irritable, yet lovable quack that goes by the name of Donald Duck!
Donald wishes to help his nephews out. They are building a perfect playground in the park (they've got a tree house, a fortress and a space rocket). In order to get them more equipment for the park, Donald must earn money doing odd jobs. There are four things Donald can do. He can sort packages at the airport. Different packages are moving past him on the conveyer belt and he needs to pick up the correct one and throw it in the correct cart.
Next job is in the toy-store. Donald needs to sort toys on shelves using the later, but there's a train on the way and if the shelves aren't secure everything can fall off. Now we come to my favorite... It's the fruit catching/sorting part time occupation. Donald must catch the fruit and place it in the correct box. If the fruit isn't caught or is placed incorrectly you won't get paid (and Donald gets angry).
And last, but by no means least is the work at the train switchboards. You'll see where the train is and get a message where you should guide the train. You have six switches to do this. In other aspects the game is more than solid for its time (great graphics, good sound, cute idea, lovable hero, etc.).
Now go and build that perfect playground for the wee ones.
