Prior to publishing its own line of PC games, Capcom Entertainment licensed Mega Man to Hi Tech Expressions. The result is a unique version of the game that puts you in the role of the title character, a robot wunderkind created to save the world from Dr. Wily and his evil robot army.
Armed with your trusty Plasma Cannon that shoots right and left, you begin at the security station outside Dr. Wily's top-secret compound. After warding off a team of snarling, leaping, robot-attack dogs and getting to the second security hut, you're at the Robot Masters selection screen where you select one of three levels to play: Seething Underground Foundry, Paralyzing Power Plant or Blistering Foundry.
At the end of each level, you face one of three bosses: Sonic Man, Volt Man or Dyna Man. Destroy them and pick up both of their weapons to add to your inventory. Boss weapons include a Nuclear Detonator, a Sonic Wave and an Electric Force Field. Prior to meeting a boss, you run, jump, climb and shoot your way through a labyrinthine complex of nasty enemies including Batvires, Frogbots and Spyders. Occasionally, when you shoot an enemy, a Life Capsule appears and gives you an extra life.
Picking up Life Savers restores your health which plummets with every hit Also available are Power Pills (increase the length of your Power Meter), Energy Pellet (increase the energy meter for the current Master Weapon) and Energy Cannisters (increase your power meter to the maximum level). Once you've completed the levels and defeated all three bosses, you advance to the Core Room, which is Dr. Wily's sanctum.
It is up to the blue robot Megaman to stop the plot of Dr. Wily, the maverick lab assistant, by jumping and shooting his way past an army of robots. At the end of these levels are three of Dr. Wily's robot masters, Dyna Man, Sonic Man and Volt man who each drop a key when defeated. These keys are then used to gain access to the room where the megacomputer Crorq is being stored for a final showdown. As always, Megaman can absorb the weapon power of the robot masters and use it as his own.
Mega Man is a side-scrolling platform game. It differs greatly from the earlier console release, with only three bosses and not very many extras to find. Lesser robots can defeated and drop a variety of power-ups including an energy capsule for filling energy, a weapon capsule which restores the power of captured robot weapons, an extra life, a continue and an energy tank which will restore all of Megaman's energy once.
