Charlie Chaplin is a unique game, in which player takes part of the world-wide famous comic. As Charlie Chaplin player has to star in films, which are much in the line of famous black-and-white masterpieces. After scene is filmed player is given opportunity to edit it. Once every scene for the movie is filmed and edited, player is allowed to film, star in and edit a much more expensive movie (i. e. expensive script, more props and extras). To resemble a Charlie Chaplin movie the game is deliberately executed in two-color palette.
Story: You're a director, who is under contract of US Gold and is trying to make a blockbuster movie featuring famous Charlie Chaplin.
First you need to read through the script and sign the contract (you move through the booklet with arrows). Then you need to direct scenes (it doesn't matter in which order the scenes are shot). While shooting you get to control Charlie. Arrows (preferably numeric keys) move him around and '5' fires.
There are always two things chasing you and you need to avoid, kick, punch them (and make people laugh). After taping of a scene comes the editing. You don't really do much there. You simply play the scene back and forth and determine the speed.
After all scenes were shot and edited you get to watch it all at the theatre. If the public likes it, it's a hit and you go on. Otherwise you're the flop of the movie industry.
General observations: The game is quite fun and features quite a unique idea. The Graphics are black and white (which fits the mood perfectly) and the only music heard is while the movie is actually in the theatre (soothing). There are some sounds otherwise as well, but they're not worth mentioning.
All in all the game is nice and should provide some entertainment. I just wish you could edit more, but then again, the game was made in 1988, so they were probably already using the full capacity of the machine.
Although billed as an action game, Charlie Chaplin is not just a plain jump-and-run, but a very original game than is quite enjoyable. Your task is to create and edit a slapstick movie by acting as the king of deadpan humor, Charlie Chaplin himself in different action scenes. Once you are happy with the result, you can put the whole film on a public screening, and then see what the critics have to say and how much it made at the box office. If you make enough money (the game unfortunately isn't always clear about just *how much* is required), you can go on and do another film, if not... well, it's back to the drawing board. Overall, a very unique and entertaining game, although obscure goals, awkward controls, and black-and-white color palette (no doubt to simulate actual Chaplin films) may turn some people off. Anyone who likes unique platform games, or want to start in their own films will probably enjoy it, though.
